Originally from Missouri, Kai Crull (they/them/theirs) is a Boston-based cellist. With specialties in contemporary, improvised, and experimental music, Kai has premiered numerous works by local composers of all levels. Outside of the classical world, Kai is the cellist for the Boston-based progressive folk band, Noble Dust. They have collaborated with notable artists such as Ezra Furman, Bruno C. Faria, Wyn Doran, Devon Dawson, and Emily Roberts. As an international performer, Kai has performed with the Missouri State Chamber Orchestra in Qingdao (China); has performed in Vienna (Austria); and studied in St. Petersburg (Russia). Kai holds a BA from Missouri State University and an MM from the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Their cello teachers include Michael A. Murray, Terry King, Josef Luitz, and Natalia Zelikova.

Composer collaborations

As an advocate for new music, Kai is passionate about working one-on-one with composers who are writing for cello. Specializing in modern and extended technique, their goal is to help composers better understand the limitless sound possibilities that the cello can offer.
